Midfielder Joe Allen has told James Pearce of the Liverpool Echo that Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers was let down last season by his players.
Despite the pressure cooker that Rodgers found himself in at the end of the 2014-15 campaign, after a string of poor results, the manager was given a chance by FSG and retained the helm at Anfield.
Allen, for one, believes this was the right call from John W. Henry and co.
“At the end of the day we were the ones who let the supporters down, the manager and the staff down and ourselves down,” insisted the 25-year-old.
“It’s as simple as that. It’s up to us to get back out there and get back to the levels we know we can reach.”
Having played the second half of Tuesday’s preseason opener in Thailand – albeit in horrendous conditions – the Welshman will be hoping to join the rest of the squad this year in “setting the record straight” when it comes to the topic of the boss.
He continued: “It takes a while to get over disappointments like that but our mentality now is to look forward. There’s a lot of work to be done between now and the start of the Premier League season.”
Although the Reds do appear to be coming out with a chip on their shoulder, Allen also makes it very clear that they are playing for much more than their manager.
However, the motivation to avenge the misgivings of last season cannot be a bad thing going forward.
Allen said: “The players we’ve got here don’t need extra motivation when they go out and wear the shirt.”
“We certainly want to make sure we hit the ground running this time around.”
