Mario Balotelli was today handed a one-match ban, a £25,000 fine, and also ordered to attend an education course for a controversial image post of Super Mario on Instagram.
The ban will begin as of now, and that therefore rules the Italian out of Sunday’s game with Arsenal at Anfield.
Earlier today Mario posted an explanation/apology on social media. Here’s what he said:
“Following the recent events related to my “Super Mario” post the FA decision has made clear that it was wrong.
I am sorry that my team-mates and supporters of Liverpool FC have to be penalised for something I did and now come to regret.
It is my intention to comply with the decision of the FA and make sure it never happens again.”
Liverpool haven’t yet ruled out further action towards Balotelli from themselves, but have said they’ll wait for a full written verdict before acting on anything.
Balotelli didn’t attend the hearing that took place today, but has denied accusations of racism and antisemitism strongly. As above, however, he has decided not the contest the decision further.
