Benteke out to prove Sherwood wrong

Liverpool striker Christian Benteke was forced to confront ex-manager Tim Sherwood over his proposed transfer to Anfield, as per the report of Chris Bascombe of the Telegraph.

The Belgian switched to Merseyside for £32.5m from Aston Villa this summer, but not before Sherwood attempted to warn Benteke off the move by claiming that he would not suit Liverpool’s style of play.

The former Genk forward challenged this statement by vowing to show observers that he could offer the team more than just the aerial presence he is known for.

Sherwood is quoted as saying:

“There’s no point going to a club where they don’t cross the ball.”

Liverpool are thought to be play a more possession-based game but the 24-year-old believes he can adapt to whatever style of play Brendan Rodgers’ employs, and said: “I don’t believe that and I told him. I spoke with him and I explained the situation to him.

“I said football has changed and the football now is modern and I can adapt. It’s not just about crossing. I can score normal goals too.

“I told him I am not afraid about it. If Liverpool bought me, then they know how to use me. That is why I can here, to show that I can play with my feet too.”

The new number nine is relishing the opportunity, but also realises that there are bound to be high expectations:

“I knew if I joined a big club I would have some pressure, so I am ready for this challenge. The pressure will bring the best out of me.

“I believe whatever level I play I will score. I believe I can produce the goals.”

Benteke is in line to make his competitive debut for the Reds this Sunday in the Premier League opener against Stoke City.
