Ahead of the Merseyside Derby on Sunday, Everton striker Richarlison has chosen to ignite the touchpaper, by claiming Liverpool’s near-flawless defender is in fact; ”not the best defender in the world.”
Since it is no longer mathematically possible for the Reds to seal the title with victory over their city rivals, they could, however, move within one win of ending a 30-year wait.
A fixture that rarely requires added tension, this week Richarlison has added his own extra incentive to Klopp’s men.
The Brazilian striker who is yet to taste victory against Liverpool in the derby, boasted about the time he dribbled past the Dutch defender
In an interview with a Brazilian YouTube channel, he preceded to name three defenders he believed to be better than Van Dijk – ”Thiago Silva, Sergio Ramos and Marquinhos” two of whom are compatriots of the Everton man.
Not content with upsetting the PFA Players’ Player of the Year 2019, Richarlison has been unashamedly quoted as saying ”everybody hates Liverpool” in the same interview. Strong words from a man whose team are about to face the runaway leaders of the Premier League.
Sunday’s derby will be the first of it’s kind, played out in front of an empty Goodison Park.
Should Liverpool avoid defeat, it would make it 11 unbeaten Merseyside derbies for Jurgen Klopp as Reds boss, making him the first manager on either side in the fixture’s 126-year history to achieve the feat.
