Brendan Rodgers tips Virgil van Dijk to guide Liverpool to Champions League glory

Ex-Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has tipped Virgil Van Dijk to lead the Reds to Champions League glory in Kiev.

The Dutchman became the most expensive defender in history when he made the switch from Southampton to Merseyside and he’s already proving why he cost so much.

The centre half has drastically improved the Red’s back-line since arriving, with his great leadership skills and superb sense of calmness, something Jurgen Klopp’s side were crying out for.

Celtic manager Rodgers now expects his former side to go and lift a sixth European cup with Van Dijk leading the backline.

Speaking on talkSPORT, via TeamTalk, Rodgers was asked if he thinks Liverpool can win the Champions League.

He replied:

I think so yes, I think when you look at them and look at Virgil Van Dijk, he makes a huge difference at the back and has given them that authority and calmness, He’s a fantastic player.

Rodgers also complimented the Liverpool front three, who, yet again, stole the headlines at the Etihad on Tuesday night, with two great finishes from the ever impressive Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino.

The team works so hard for the three front players, who have speed, power and workrate with a incredible ability to score a lot of goals. At home, it’s always going to be difficult for any opponent at Anfield, and away from home, they are set up to hurt you on the counter.

After a crazy 48 hours of Champions League football, Liverpool will either be facing Real Madrid, Bayern Munich or Roma in the semi-finals of the Champions League, with the draw taking place on Friday.
