Carragher claims Origi is “not quite good enough” for Liverpool

Jamie Carragher claims that Divock Origi is “not quite good enough” to be a Liverpool player.

The Belgian has become a cult hero in the eyes of many Reds supporters – maybe even a legend.

Origi has scored vital goals in the last 18 months or so, including two against Barcelona in Liverpool’s famous Champions League semi-final win and one in the final against Tottenham.

Carragher doesn’t think he is at the level required, however, telling Viasport that Liverpool need to have a better backup option than the Belgian.

He said:

If you look at Tuesday night, the big problem for Liverpool is when one of those front-three are not playing. Sadio Mane had to come off and the player they bring on in is Divock Origi, who is a Liverpool legend because of what happened last year at the Wanda Metropolitano, but it’s not quite good enough for the best team in the world to be bringing that quality on.

He went on to say:

Don’t forget, Liverpool never signed a player last summer so you would think there’s a lot of money there waiting to be spent. Jurgen Klopp is probably just waiting another year on, some players getting another year older and then he can maybe refresh it. He gave Origi a new contract so he couldn’t go and buy an attacking player on the back of that but now I think is definitely the time for Liverpool to reinforce, certainly in the attack, to keep those three on their toes and to rotate them, play different systems.

I completely agree with Carragher’s assessment of Origi, with the 24-year-old worthy of being treasured by Reds fans, but for me, he is still not good enough.

His ability to score big goals is admittedly impressive, especially his nervelessness in such situations, but too often his all-round game lets him down.

The drop-off in quality when he replaced Sadio Mane against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday was hugely noticeable.

I wouldn’t necessarily sell Origi this summer, but Liverpool need to be in a situation where he is lower down the attacking pecking order, rather than often being the first substitute.
