Carragher launches scathing attack on Lovren

Jamie Carragher has laid into Dejan Lovren, criticising him for trying to ‘fight everyone he plays against.’

Lovren had a nightmare against Watford last month, being bullied by Troy Deeney in the Reds’ 3-0 defeat – a game that saw their unbeaten Premier League run come to an end.

Speaking on the Maych X Pajak podcast, Carragher discussed the Croatian’s weaknesses:

I’ve watched Lovren in a Liverpool shirt for so long, making the same mistake. He wants to fight everyone he plays against.

Harry Kane started this season and stands on Lovren, just uses his body and knocks him out the way.

He’s 28, he should have learnt by now. There’s no problem letting Deeney bring the ball down.

I think this summer needs to see Lovren’s Reds career come to an end, after he’s now spent six years at Anfield.

I don’t think the 30-year-old has always been as bad as some would make you believe, but equally, I believe that he is too inconsistent and injury-prone for this Liverpool team.

Lovren was arguably the Reds’ best player in the 2018 Champions League final, but his performance against Watford was up there with the worst of the season.

Jurgen Klopp has turned his side into one of the the best in club football – a level Lovren now looks out of his depth in. When he plays, he looks a noticeable step down from Joe Gomez, for example, who is eight years his junior.

As Carragher rightly alludes to, his preference for getting into scraps with opponents sums up his erratic nature, and a defence rarely feels at ease with him around.

Klopp had the same issue with Martin Skrtel and he moved him on – the Slovakian had good games, but was far too physical and unpredictable – and I expect Lovren to head in the same direction in the summer.
