Ex-Red Stephen Darby forced to retire due to Motor Neurone Disease

Former Liverpool defender Stephen Darby has been forced to retire from football after he was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.

In a statement released by the PFA, Matthew Buck, Director of Player Management at the PFA confirmed the news that the Bolton Wanderers star has had to call time on his playing career.

Stephen has recently been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease and as a consequence has had to retire from professional football with immediate effect.

Darby joined the Liverpool academy at an early age and was promoted to train with the first team in 2006.

He went on to play six games for the Reds and was loaned out to Swindon Town, Notts County and Rochdale during his time at Liverpool. He left the club in 2012 and joined Bradford City.

Darby went on to play for Bradford for five years, before joining Bolton on a free transfer in 2017.

We wish Stephen and his family all the best during this time.
