Former Liverpool players Steve McManaman and Michael Owen have publicly backed the club’s manager Brendan Rodgers to succeed in his time at Anfield.

McManaman told ESPN: “I am pleased they have stuck with him. I don’t agree with this haphazard, “let’s sack managers on a whim,” plan. I always try and stick up for managers when they are under pressure. This clamour for change all the time is not good for the game.”

The 43-year-old, speaking at BT Sport’s launch of their coverage of European football next season, also touched on the club’s surprising end to the season and the transfer activity at the club:

“They finished the season rather strangely, rather poorly in the end, they’ve already brought a couple of players in. Let’s see what other business they do in the summer, they did a lot of business last year in the summer and it didn’t work. Let’s see what they do this year.”

When asked about Rodgers’ need to deliver a trophy at the club, Owen said that he thought the Ulsterman was close to that winning formula:

“Brendan Rodgers I believe is the right man to do it, he’s proven that, you know, you could one slip away from winning league only a couple of seasons ago so he can build a winning team.”

He then went on to say that the club’s transfer activity had to be better this summer if they wanted to challenge for the top honours again.

“They need to buy and they probably need to buy smarter than they have done over the past season or two. They need more goals in the team, they didn’t score half the amount of goals they scored in the previous season.”
