Fabinho reveals he had never played at centre-back before this season

Fabinho has revealed that he had never played at centre-back before this season, summing up how superb he has been for Liverpool.

The Brazilian has been drafted into an auxiliary role because of the centre-back crisis the Reds are suffering from, with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez likely to be out for the rest of the season.

On top of that, Joel Matip has been in and out of the side, leaving Fabinho as the only established player in that position.

Despite looking like he has played at centre-back for years, the 27-year-old revealed to Liverpool’s official website that he has no experience in the position:

In my first season, I’d already played as a centre-half and last season, I don’t remember exactly when, but I played some games there, too.

The manager had prepared me to play in this position, so it was not a surprise when I had to play there because of the injuries and I am happy because it’s worked out good so far.

This revelation only makes Fabinho’s form more impressive, with the ex-Monaco man arguably Liverpool’s Player of the Year so far.

Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah are the other strongest contenders for that accolade, but the Brazil international deserves extra credit for excelling in a new role.

He is one of the most important players Jurgen Klopp has to call upon, possessing vast levels of quality, intelligence and versatility, and he will be vital between now and the end of the season.

It could be that Fabinho has a new centre-back partner alongside him soon, should Liverpool delve into the transfer market in January.
