Ferdinand fears Liverpool could dominate the Premier League for years

Liverpool could dominate the Premier League for years to come, according to Rio Ferdinand.

The former centre-back was part of dominant Manchester United teams during the 2000s and 2010s, winning six league titles in his time at Old Trafford.

It is now Liverpool who are threatening to enjoy a period of sustained success, however, sitting 22 points clear of Manchester City and winning both the Champions League and Club World Cup in the last eight months.

Speaking at the launch of BT’s 4-3-3 football partnership strategy, Ferdinand admits that he fears what Liverpool could achieve in the coming years:

I think that is the scary part for everyone else is that Liverpool, this isn’t about today, they’re going to be in this for the long haul.

They look like a team that is being built for the long-term.

I believe Ferdinand has every right to be concerned, with the Reds perfectly placed to enjoy their best period of the Premier League era.

Firstly, they have stability, with Jurgen Klopp recently signing a new long-term deal, as well as several key men, such as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson also commiting their futures to the club.

Liverpool’s players are also at an age where they can dominate for a number of years, with James Milner (34), Adam Lallana (31) and Dejan Lovren (30) their only outfield players over 30-years-old.

On top of that, the Reds’ rivals are in transition, with Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham all appointing new managers in the last year, and United sitting 38 points adrift of Liverpool under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

City remain the biggest threat, in my opinion, considering they still have Pep Guardiola in charge and a formidable group of players.

I do think they have come to an end of their cycle, however, with key figures such as Fernandinho, David Silva and Sergio Aguero all in their 30s and their performances not as all-conquering as they were in 2017/18 and 2018/19, when they accumulated a combined 198 points.

This is the most exciting time to be a Liverpool fan in decades, in my opinion, and while one league title will feel fantastic, I, like Ferdinand, believe everything is in place for the Reds to add more to their tally.
