Gaitán could pave Lavezzi move

UPDATE

The Independent (Ireland) are tonight reporting that any possibility of Rodgers’ interest in Ezequiel Lavezzi becoming a reality are ‘wide of the mark’.

It was reported that the Argentinian forward could be interested in a Liverpool move and that the club were willing to spend £8m on the attacker (see below), but any suggestion that the Reds will show more ambition in the player market has been quashed by FFP’s restrictions.

Paris Saint Germain are looking to recruit Benfica winger Nicolás Gaitán, paving the way for Ezequiel Lavezzi to finally make a move to Liverpool this month, according to The Express.

The Reds are long-term admirers of the forward, after missing out when PSG signed him from Napoli in 2012. Lavezzi could be available for as little as £8m, as Laurent Blanc looks to reduce the huge wage bill at the Parc des Princes, with the 29-year-old reportedly earning £3.5m per season.

After scoring 9 league goals in the 2013/14 campaign, the Argentine has seen his squad role lessened this year – with Brazilian winger Lucas Moura enjoying an excellent first half of the season. Zlatan Ibrahimović and Edinson Cavani, two of the first names on the team sheet you would assume, occupy the other two slots in PSG’s front line.

Lavezzi would fit in to Brendan Rodgers’ versatile squad, having had experience playing on both flanks, in addition to being deployed as a central striker on multiple occasions at Napoli.

Gaitán, who is being touted as Lavezzi’s natural successor, is also reportedly a £30m target for Manchester United, with Louis van Gaal looking to utilise him alongside compatriot Ángel Di María.
