Liverpool vs Galatasaray: UEFA ban Turkish fans from Anfield after Juventus violence

Liverpool’s Champions League path has taken a dramatic turn as UEFA confirmed that Galatasaray supporters will be banned from attending the last-16 second leg at Anfield on March 18.

The ruling comes as a severe blow to the Turkish champions, who are famed for their vocal and intimidating away support. Despite the club’s immediate efforts to contest the decision, reports from Reuters indicate that the appeal has already been rejected, leaving the “Lion” to face the Anfield atmosphere entirely alone.

The Turin incident: why UEFA acted

The sanctions follow “ugly scenes” during Galatasaray’s chaotic playoff tie against Juventus in Turin on February 25. UEFA’s appeals body confirmed the punishment was a direct result of “throwing of objects, lighting of fireworks and crowd disturbances.”

The situation in Italy reportedly turned dangerous both inside and outside the stadium. According to local media reports, Galatasaray supporters clashed with police, but the most harrowing allegations involved a man and his daughter who were taken to hospital after being struck by a firecracker directed toward the home fans.

In a statement, the Turkish club confirmed the disciplinary blow:

“Due to the fan incidents during the UEFA Champions League match we played away against Juventus on 25 February, 2026, the UEFA Disciplinary Committee has decided to impose a fine of €40,000 on our club and a sanction of playing without spectators in the next away match.”

A daunting task for the Turkish champions

The ban changes the entire complexion of the second leg. While Galatasaray secured a thrilling 7-5 aggregate victory over Juventus scoring twice in extra time against 10 men to progress they must now navigate the return fixture on Merseyside without a single traveling fan in the stands.

The two sides have already met this season during the league phase in September, where Galatasaray triumphed 1-0 thanks to a Victor Osimhen penalty. That night was also marked by fireworks, though they were lit outside Liverpool’s team hotel by home supporters to disrupt the Reds sleep. Now, the tables have turned, and the legendary Anfield atmosphere will be entirely unopposed.

Arne Slot reacts to the draw

Despite the disciplinary drama, Liverpool boss Arne Slot remains focused on the footballing challenge. Speaking to Liverpool’s official website after the draw, Slot noted the difficulty of facing an opponent they have already struggled against this term.

“Given the possibilities of the draw we got exactly what we anticipated and that is a tough last 16 draw against an opponent we have faced once already this season,” Slot said. “We know in the away leg we will have to perform better than the last time we were in Istanbul back in September.”

Slot continued: “That is our immediate challenge in this tie, especially as we know Galatasaray had such a positive result against Juventus to reach the last 16. But the main feeling is excitement because this is what we worked so hard for in the league stage. We wanted to be here and now we want to make the most of being here.”

Key dates and duture stakes

The first leg will take place in the cauldron of Istanbul on March 10 (17:45 GMT), with the return leg at Anfield scheduled for March 18 (20:00 GMT).

The stakes couldn’t be higher for both clubs. Not only is a place in the elite final eight on the line, but the winner of this tie is already scheduled to face either Manchester City or Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.

Before the European action begins, Liverpool must first navigate a tricky domestic hurdle. They travel to face Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux in the FA Cup fifth round, just days after the Midlands side snatched a shock 2-1 Premier League win over the Reds.
