Former Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia has said he would “definitely be interested” in a return to Merseyside.
With two members of Brendan Rodgers’ backroom staff leaving last week, many names have been thrown in the ring to feel those vacancies.
One of those names, Hyypia, has spoken out about his interest for the job, as quoted in the Express: “It would be great to work for a club which I love.
“I would be definitely be interested if Liverpool think I could help them.”
The ex-Liverpool skipper was a fan favourite and played over 300 times for the Reds. His career in management started off promisingly with Bayer Leverkusen but then a loss of form saw him get sacked.
He also stated that going into coaching, rather than management again, would not be a problem:
“If there were no interesting opportunities as a manager then I would be ready to be an assistant.”
However, Hyypia will face competition from Rene Meulensteen and Pako Ayesteran, according to The Telegraph.
Ayesteran is a familiar face for Liverpool fans and knows the club well. He recently guided Maccabi Tel Aviv to the first ever treble in Israeli football.
Meulensteen on the other hand is a very experienced assistant manager who has worked under the watchful eye of Sir Alex Ferguson and Guus Hiddink.
