Now that the season has drawn to a close, and all that is left is the final of the FA Cup and the Champions League, teams across the country will be looking for players who can come in an improve the current squads at their managers disposal.
This is something that will prove all the more important for Liverpool, as they look to close a gap in the league that has opened within the space of less than a year. However, there is some good news for Liverpool fans as we enter the beginning of transfer season.
Tony Barrett of the Times reported this evening that Liverpool are due to start their business early, with the acquisition of two players out of contract with their current clubs in Danny Ings and James Milner.
This summer transfer window will see improvements in midfield and up-front needed, areas which have been a matter of concern for fans and former players alike. With the loss of Gerrard in midfield and doubts over the future of Lucas, Milner would most likely be offered the chance to cement his place in the Liverpool first eleven from the very start of the season. His vast experience will be seen as a major plus to Liverpool, an area lacking in recent years.
Ings will also be seen as an upgrade on the current forward options, as the future of Lambert and Balotelli are far from certain. It could be said that Lambert joined Liverpool at a time when it was always going to be hard to become a regular, fighting age and a slight shift in the style of play at the club, but with Ings’ movement and finishing a marked improvement on Lambert’s, he should have cause for optimism that his Liverpool career would be much more fruitful than the former Southampton man if he was to sign on the dotted line in the coming months.
The future of two current Liverpool players appears to be away from Anfield, as in the last few days Jose Enrique and Fabio Borini have been told that they can start looking for clubs elsewhere.
Last season Borini gave up the chance to join recently relegated QPR to fight for his place with Liverpool, but a starting place never came to fruition, and you have to see him as wanting to progress his career away from Liverpool.
Likewise with Enrique, who has found his Liverpool career been hampered with poor form and injury.
