Ings: I am a good fit for Liverpool

New Liverpool forward Danny Ings has claimed that he is the perfect man to spearhead the Reds’ attack, stating that his ability to run in behind will bring out the best in the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino – the more creative players in the side.

23-year-old Ings joined Liverpool last month as a free agent, after his contract at Burnley expired, and his blistering pace has been evident in pre-season for the club, even going on to score his first goal, coming against Adelaide United.

Ings said: “After my knee injury [in 2012] I sort of devoted my whole time to working on my speed, my movement, and my creativity

“What I’ve found was really effective, even at Championship level, was making runs constantly in behind.

“As soon as a defender switches off that run in behind is so effective.

“As long as there’s someone stretching the pitch and you’ve got your creative players behind you in that space and you’ve got players at this football club to feed those runs you can be an effective team.

“It’s certainly something I’m looking forward to.”

With competition for places up front against the likes of the injury-prone Daniel Sturridge, £32.5m signing Christian Benteke, rebel Mario Balotelli, Rickie Lambert, who has been subject to much interest from West Brom after failing to convince Brendan Rodgers of his worth and Fabio Borini, who could also be on his way out – Ings may have to wait for his chance to shine, but will be keen to impress when given the opportunity.
