Danny Ings has chosen his shirt number for his new club and has made sure he avoids the vacant numbers 7 and 8.
Steven Gerrard has left the club which leaves the iconic number 8 free and the number 7 has not been taken since Luis Suarez left the club in 2014.
The striker will also cut his holiday short in a bid to join the team for their pre-season tour to the Far East and Australia.
Ings has chosen the number 28 shirt, the same number Steven Gerrard sported when he first broke into the team. The England Under-21 international states that he did not want to add pressure on him by choosing a lower number.
He is quoted in the Daily Mail as saying: “You have got to take that pressure off yourself as a young lad coming through – that is what I personally think.
“I would make sure I am established before taking any of those numbers (like No 8)! It is such a huge club. That was the thinking behind it. I wouldn’t want to go to Liverpool and chuck a shirt on my back like that – it is pressure you don’t need.”
Ings is currently playing in the Under-21 European Championship and he is entitled to a three-week break once that concludes. But the Englishman will only be taking a two-week break as he wants to spend as much time with his teammates as he can.
“I don’t want to be playing catch up.
“I would prefer to be around the squad and ready to go for the start of the season.
“They will probably give me a programme (to go to the gym on holiday) but it has not got to that point yet. You need down time and for your body to relax and prepare for the season. At the same time I am raring to go and can’t wait to get in.”
