Ings welcomes competition for places

New signing Danny Ings says he isn’t fazed by the expected arrival of Belgium forward Christian Benteke.

Liverpool have activated the Aston Villa forward’s £32.5m release clause in his contract.

Ings, 22, has made a positive impact during his first two appearances for the club whilst on their pre-season tour of Australia and Asia.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Ings said: “At a club like this it is expected to sign top players.

“It can only lift you as a player because it is all competition to get that starting place.

“I moved here knowing that there was going to be big signings here on top of the quality that is already here.”

It is understood that Benteke will have his medical on Merseyside on Monday before the club make a decision whether or not to fly him out for the last game on the tour on Friday.

Ings, however, is looking forward to playing alongside any new additions Brendan Rodgers makes during the summer.

“For me it is all about developing and being the best I can be every day and try to compete against those players. It is only good additions for me to train and play alongside,” added Ings.

“It is all down to the staff and manager who picks the side. All you can do is improve every day and do the best you can day in day out.”

Once Benteke arrives at Anfield, the Liverpool hierarchy will looks to offload current strikers Mario Balotelli, Fabio Borini and Rickie Lambert.
