Liverpool sprung into life in the transfer market over the weekend, firstly by signing Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich and then making a big money move for Wolves’ Diogo Jota, who joined The Reds in a deal that could eventually be worth up to £45m.
However, James Pearce of The Athletic has revealed that Jota isn’t the only forward who Liverpool were interested in over the summer.
Like any competent club should do, Liverpool did a lot of work looking at other targets as well as Jota, and whilst the interest in Ismaila Sarr is fairly common knowledge by now, Pearce has also revealed that The Reds did extensive work on tracking Jonathan David, then of Genk.
However, the Canadian international was sold to Lille last month, meaning Liverpool didn’t really get the chance to sign the forward.

It’s great to see that Liverpool did extensive work on identifying a forward player over the summer as there was a worry that The Reds were going to go through the season without making a new signing.
Both David and Sarr would have been viable options but in Jota, they probably got the player most suited to the needs of the team.
The Portuguese star can player right across the front line and his Premier League experience will hopefully mean he won’t need a long bedding in period.
