This is a massive blow for Liverpool, given Matip’s incredible form in 2019. He has forged an excellent partnership with Virgil Van Dijk at the back and was crucial in Liverpool’s Champions League victory earlier this year.
The question for Jurgen Klopp to answer now is; who starts in his place for the next six weeks? Lovren started against Spurs but struggled to deal with the threat of Harry Kane throughout the match, whilst Joe Gomez sat and watched from the sidelines.
Gomez has impressed in the past but has been troubled with injuries throughout his time at Anfield. The England international will surely be given a chance to impress in the League Cup this week, which could be his opportunity to prove that he deserves his place in the starting line-up in the Premier League over Lovren.
