John Aldridge believes criticism of Thiago is ‘very harsh’

Liverpool legend John Aldridge has labelled the recent criticism of Thiago as ‘very harsh’ in his Liverpool Echo column.

The Irishman believes it is far too soon to judge the 29-year-old after another former Red, Dietmar Hamann, criticised the Spaniard’s apparent negative impact on the team’s style earlier this week.

The 62-year-old, who scored 63 times during his playing days at Anfield, had this to say in response to Thiago’s detractors.

Thiago has come in for some recent criticism after the draw with Manchester United and I find that very harsh. People questioning his role in the side if he suits Liverpool’s style.

He’s only played three times in the league since he’s come back and it’s at a time when the front three aren’t clicking.

After arriving amid a furore of excitement back in September, Liverpool fans were made to wait until they could watch their new midfielder in full flow after a horror tackle in October’s Merseyside derby left the former Bayern Munich star sidelined for more than two months.

Aldridge also believes its only fair to judge the ‘gifted’ Thiago at the end of the season, his first in England.

READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Hamann’s comments have been met with almost blanket derision from those of a Liverpool persuasion.

Thiago is a sublime footballer whose record well and truly speaks for itself; his first proper run in the team has merely coincided with a poor period for Jurgen Klopp’s side, so the two are not mutually exclusive.

If anything, the Spaniard’s performances have been a beacon of optimism for the Reds, with his incisive passing catching the eye in what have otherwise been dismal all-round displays from the Premier League champions.
