Jurgen Klopp hints that Liverpool could sign players in January

Jurgen Klopp has suggested Liverpool could sign players in the January transfer window.

The Reds have suffered terrible bad luck with injuries this season, with endless key men unavailable at different times.

Liverpool have been most hampered at centre-back, with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all out at the moment.

There have been calls for Klopp to dip into the transfer market this month, but no business has been completed so far.

Speaking to reporters [via This Is Anfield], the Liverpool boss hinted that a new face could arrive, stressing that it would have to be the right player, though:

So we have solutions in the squad, obviously, yes and we struggle still. The injuries we have in this specific moment, they happened – most of the time – in the centre-half position.

That’s all clear, because some players are injured, play pretty quick like Joel and then get injured again, it can just happen like this when it starts at one point and it doesn’t stop.

So we have solutions in the squad, and if we can, or if we will do something in the winter, I just don’t know.

It’s really like that. It’s a very difficult transfer window, as you can imagine, not a lot of clubs have real money, some clubs don’t have money but don’t need money [from sales], so that’s the situation.

Doing ‘something’ makes no sense; doing the right thing would make sense, but doing something [for the sake of it] makes no sense.

Klopp’s preference for sticking with the players he has at his disposal is admirable, but there comes a time when a new signing feels like a necessity.

That’s the position Liverpool are in at centre-back currently, with Fabinho the only established player available in that role – even he is a newcomer there.

If Klopp chooses to trust Matip staying fit for long periods, and relies on young pair Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips, it would be a big risk.

The Premier League title race looks increasingly likely to go to the wire this season and bringing in a defender would increase the Reds’ chances of securing back-to-back titles.
