Klopp confirms Liverpool wanted to sign Sancho

Liverpool were interested in signing Jadon Sancho from Manchester City, but their Premier League rivals were unwilling to sell to them, report the Guardian.

Sancho is enjoying a season to remember at Borussia Dortmund, proving to be one of the Bundesliga’s star players as Lucien Favre’s side top the table.

The 18-year-old has scored eight goals in 28 appearances, also making his England debut against Croatia last October.

Jurgen Klopp has admitted Liverpool were keen on bringing him in before he moved to Germany, but City’s reluctance to sell to another English club scuppered any potential deal:

Buying English players is a smart idea because we would never have a chance to get Sancho.

We are not blind – we saw him, we liked him and then we think: ‘Can we get him?’ No. Because English clubs don’t sell to other English clubs.

I don’t know exactly what the reason is for that but they don’t do it. Now they can go to Germany, which is a wonderful league.

The Mirror are claiming that English sides could come back in for Sancho now that he is a Dortmund player, however.

Only a huge offer will have a chance of prising the youngster away, though, as his stock continues to rise all the time.

Sancho started for Dortmund on Monday night, but Favre’s men could only draw 0-0 away to Nurnberg, taking them three points clear of Bayern Munich.
