Klopp irked by defensive error despite Asia Trophy win

Liverpool may have beaten Leicester 2-1 to clinch the PL Asia Trophy, but Jurgen Klopp was left frustrated by sloppy defending from his side.

The Foxes opened the scoring in Hong Kong as Christian Fuchs, enjoying plenty of space, delivered a cross to Islam Slimani, who overpowered James Milner to head home.

Liverpool had turned the game around by half time following fine goals from Mohamed Salah and Philippe Coutinho and were in control for the remainder of the contest.

Even as his side celebrated, however, Klopp could not help but dwell on the lapse in concentration which saw his side concede.

Asked what was the most pleasing aspect of the victory, Klopp told Sky Sports: “Two games, two wins, that’s of course the best thing.

“It was very difficult again. When you are not at one-hundred per cent of your physical ability, players like [Riyad] Mahrez and [Jamie] Vardy all cause you problems like hell.

“I thought we could have defended the first goal seven times. At the end, it’s a cross and a free header. Not nice, but it happens.

“We have to stabilise ourselves in defence situations,” he added. “You don’t have to train [to defend the first goal]. That’s only being a real defender, a real challenger in these moments.

“If we have the ball, then shoot it somewhere! But we kept it alive a little bit.”

It was Coutinho who inspired the Reds’ fightback, setting up the first with a delightful chip and curling in the second in trademark fashion.

“There’s no doubt about [his quality],” Klopp said of his number 10. “He’s a fantastic footballer and he’s a fantastic boy. The first goal was his chip… [and there were] a few wonderful moments again offensively.”
