Liverpool could cancel Awoniyi’s loan spell at Mainz

Liverpool could choose to cancel Taiwo Awoniyi’s loan spell at Mainz, according to Kicker.

The 22-year-old joined the Bundesliga club on a temporary basis last summer, with the intention being for him to stay until the end of the season.

Awoniyi has struggled for game time in Germany, however, managing just 146 minutes of league action in 2019/20 to date.

Liverpool reportedly believe that ending the loan prematurely could be beneficial, as they could send the forward to a league whose transfer window is still open.

It is mentioned by Sport Witness that some of the countries Awoniyi could move to are Austria, Czech Republic, Russia and the USA, but no specific clubs are reported.

I believe Awoniyi is at a point in his career where he needs to be settled somewhere permanently.

At 22, he has already had a host of loan moves, including spells at Frankfurt, Genk and Royal Excel Mouscron, but none have allowed him to kick on.

I think it is clear that Awoniyi has no future at Liverpool, considering he is yet to make a first-team appearance and that he is now behind numerous top class attacking players in the pecking order.

Liverpool should do the best thing for the player, which is to end his time at Mainz and find him a new club where he can fulfill his potential.

These loan spells across Europe are ultimately benefiting nobody, whether it be Awoniyi, the Reds or the teams he is moving to.
