Liverpool draw up four-man shortlist for Virgil van Dijk’s successor

Virgil van Dijk is still going strong at Liverpool and has shown no signs of being past his best.

Granted, the Dutchman isn’t as imperious as he once was, but he is still one of the best central defenders in the world.

However, his current deal runs out in the summer of 2027, putting Liverpool in an interesting position.

It remains to be seen if they offer him a new deal, but in the meantime, they have already drawn up a shortlist to find his successor.

Liverpool on the lookout for Virgil van Dijk successor

As relayed by Caught Offside, the Reds are keeping tabs on Alessandro Bastoni, Nico Schlotterbeck, Jules Kounde and Murillo as potential central defensive options.

Each of them is a key player for their respective clubs, with Murillo the only one with Premier League experience.

Before moving on to potential transfer targets, Liverpool need to decide what to do with Van Dijk.

His current deal expires next summer, and so far he has started every Premier League and UEFA Champions League game under Andoni Iraola.

Van Dijk is nowhere near his last legs, but Liverpool need to clarify his future as quickly as possible.

Our best guess is that he will get at least a 12-month extension, giving the Reds more time to find a replacement for one of their greatest-ever players.
