‘Fantastic’ – Steven Gerrard names Liverpool’s best player vs Arsenal

Liverpool fell to a 1-0 defeat against Arsenal despite putting on a creditable performance against the champions at Anfield.

An early goal from Kai Havertz proved to be the difference between the two sides, after which the Gunners sat back to expertly defend their lead.

Liverpool dominated large parts of the game and saw a lot of the ball.

And Steven Gerrard has singled out Alexis Mac Allister for special praise, although the midfielder didn’t cover himself with too much glory late in the game with his antics.

Starting in the centre of the park alongside youngster Trey Nyoni, the Argentine was in the thick of the action at both ends of the pitch.

He aggressively pressed and track back when Arsenal had the ball, and as the game went on, his front-footed nature set the tone for the rest of his teammates.

“Mac Allister was fantastic yesterday,” said Gerrard via The Overlap.

“After the 10–15 minutes where Arsenal were on top, I thought Liverpool really controlled the midfield area.

“Young Trey [Nyoni] was fabulous for the time he was on. I didn’t think he needed to come off the pitch so early.

“Mac Allister was arguably Liverpool’s best player. I love the form he’s in. He’s playing fantastically well.”

Late in the game, however, he tried to go down cheaply and get Noni Madueke sent off, which honestly was rather hilarious to witness.

Nevertheless, a wonderful performance from Mac Allister, who has really come into his own under Andoni Iraola this season.
