Two Liverpool midfielders experienced rather differing fortunes on Monday, across two different matches.
In the afternoon, Curtis Jones again shone for the Under-23s, scoring a quickfire hat-trick in his side’s 6-0 win over Sunderland in the Premier League Cup.
It was a performance that, once again, outlined how much the teenager is pushing for a regular first-team berth. Jones was the hero when Liverpool beat Everton in the FA Cup, scoring the only goal of the game, and he was back in the goals for the Under 23’s on Monday afternoon.
In the evening, Naby Keita flattered to deceive in Liverpool’s 3-2 victory against West Ham at Anfield, starting well but ultimately struggling to influence matters, prior to being substituted.
The Guinean’s Reds career is still looking to take off, more than 18 months after arriving at Anfield.
Given Jones’ superb form, and his impact when given the chance in the first-team this season, some believe he now represents a superior option to Keita.
These Liverpool supporters talked up the idea on Twitter, calling for Jurgen Klopp to give the midfielder a chance over his more established teammate.
Curtis Jones deserves games ahead of Keita.
4 to go.
