Liverpool may have been presented with a solution to their current defensive dilemma as Arsenal defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos, or just Sokratis for those without fluent Greek, had his contract terminated by mutual consent.
The 32-year-old, who played under Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund has had his time at the Emirates Stadium brought to an end with immediate effect and, having already been linked by Fabrizio Romano, the Reds could capitalise.
Despite not making a single Premier League appearance this term, just last season Sokratis remained a pivotal part of the Gunners’ defence.
In normal circumstances, the release of the out of favour Greek defender would pass through Liverpool’s remit without so much as a second glance. However, with central defenders currently in short supply at Anfield, many Kopites are weighing up the pros and cons of signing Sokratis until the end of the campaign.
