Liverpool hope to benefit from Huddersfield academy closure

Liverpool are one of a few top Premier League clubs looking to make the best of what is a tricky situation for many young talents forced out of Huddersfield Town’s academy setup.

The Terriers have decided to downgrade their academy from category two to category four, meaning there will now only be under-18 and under-23 sides at the club, with the players formerly in the younger ranks of the academy now without a team.

According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool are going toe-to-toe with fierce rivals Everton and Manchester United, as well as Manchester City, in trying to snap up the best talent coming away from Huddersfield Town.

Manchester United appear to have reacted first and currently have 15 players from the Yorkshire club on trial with a view to bolstering their academy with some new talents, but Liverpool are also circling.

Two of the talents the Reds are said to be interested in are Harvey Rowe and Sam Murray — both of whom are amongst those on trial at United.

Huddersfield had this to say about their decision to downsize:

Our academy system must provide a strong and obvious pathway to the first team for players who are good enough, whilst also representing value for the club. Upon review, this is not something that we could claim

This rare situation is a great opportunity for Liverpool to bolster their academy, as no fees will be owed to Huddersfield for any players who sign up at Anfield in the aftermath of this down-scaling.
