Liverpool legend backs Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to succeed

When speaking to Sky Sports, Liverpool legend, Steven Gerrard, has backed The Reds’ new signing, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to succeed at his new club.

Liverpool announced the £35m signing of Oxlade-Chamberlain near lunchtime on deadline day after his refusal to sign a new contract at Arsenal, where he spent six years of his career at after signing from Southampton in 2011.

The 24-year-old made 198 appearances, scoring 20 and getting 32 assists for Arsenal and his recent move to Anfield has got everyone talking, including Gerrard.

Gerrard, who spent 17 years in Liverpool’s senior side, playing 701 times for his boyhood club, scoring 184 times and getting 105 assists, also winning the Champions League with them in 2005, has come out in support of the new boy at Liverpool.

He said that Liverpool have signed someone who is “already a fantastic player” at the age of 24.

Gerrard added by saying

I think he definitely strengthens the group and the team, He’s English, he’s 24, he’s just coming into his peak years.

He’s a very quick and exciting player. It seems as if he wasn’t happy at Arsenal, so now hopefully he can settle down, give the best years of his career at Liverpool Football Club. But I think he’s a very, very positive signing.

Oxlade-Chamberlain wants to play in central midfield at Liverpool, just like Steven Gerrard did and if he can live up to just half of Gerrard’s legacy then he’d be a fans favourite at Anfield.
