Liverpool loanee Kane ruled out for the rest of the season

Herbie Kane will miss the rest of the season through injury, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The midfielder only joined Hull City on loan last month, due to a lack of first-team opportunities at Anfield.

Kane has suffered an ankle ligament injury, however, meaning his campaign has come to a premature end.

The 21-year-old has made two appearances for Liverpool, the last of which came in the 5-0 defeat at Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup in December.

This is a bitter blow for Kane, who will have been desperate to prove himself in senior football.

In truth, I don’t see any future for him at Liverpool, considering the wealth of midfield options ahead of him. The likes of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Gini Wijnaldum, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are all established, international footballers.

Unlike someone such as Trent Alexander-Arnold, I don’t see Kane as a special academy prospect – more of a functional midfielder who could be a good addition for a club in and around the Championship.

He is solid on the ball – 77.5 per cent pass competition rate for Hull – and hard-working, while his spell at Doncaster Rovers last season saw him named in League One’s Team of the Season, highlighting his potential influence.

Once Kane has recovered from this injury setback, he should look at permanent options, in my opinion.

Rather than return to Liverpool and risk rotting in the Under-23s, he is now at an age where senior first-team action should be a regular thing.
