Liverpool made monster bid to sign Gareth Bale

Liverpool broke their transfer record in the January transfer window with the £75m signing of Virgil van Dijk from Southampton but fresh reports have claimed that the Reds made a similarly large offer last summer which would’ve seen their transfer record smashed.

In the market for some top quality attacking additions last summer, Liverpool recruited Mohamed Salah from Roma but were eager for more, and are believed to have made a sizeable bid to bring Gareth Bale back to the Premier League from Real Madrid.

Spanish source Mundo Deportivo have carried claims that Liverpool not only wanted to sign Bale last summer but were prepared to offer Philippe Coutinho as part of the deal.

It’s reported that the Reds offered a huge €70m and Coutinho in exchange for the Welsh wing wizard. The transfer never materialised as we’re well aware, and Liverpool went on to sell Coutinho to Madrid’s bitter rivals Barcelona for a fee in the region of £134m.

Bale is reportedly set to leave Madrid this summer with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United eager to bring him back to English football – should Liverpool be looking to revive their alleged interest in the former Tottenham star?
