Liverpool have presented an offer to Serie A side Atalanta for right-back Davide Zappacosta, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.
The 23-year-old has been with Atalanta since 2011, but has only played with them last season thanks to a loan-deal with Avellino which lasted three seasons.
Zappacosta has made 17 caps for Italy at Under-21 level, playing against England in the Under-21 European Championships on Wednesday. He also made 27 appearances last year for Atalanta – scoring 3 goals in the process.
Gazzetta dello Sport refer to Zappacosta as a player who’s reached a ‘sound performance level’ this season, making good use of his game time in Serie A.
The Reds have been heavily linked with Nathaniel Clyne, for which a deal is likely to be concluded next week, however, the club may be after another young full-back as rumours of Javi Manquillo ending his loan spell early linger.
Liverpool, of course, also have Jon Flanagan, but his recent injury record may mean the club don’t feel confident relying on him. Andre Wisdom is also expected to return to the club after his loan spell at West Brom, but it’s feasible he will again go elsewhere next season on loan.
Liverpool purchased defender Joe Gomez from Charlton last week, but any deal for Zappacosta wouldn’t conflict with that buy as reports suggest the young Englishman will be loaned out this summer.
Any deal between Liverpool and Zappacosta wouldn’t go unopposed, as GdS report interest from both Torino and Fiorentina in the young Italian.
