The Athletic’s James Pearce has seemingly ruled Liverpool out of any continued pursuit of Watford forward Ismaila Sarr.
The weekend arrival of Diogo Jota from Wolves, for a fee which could rise to £45million, was seen by many as the alternative option to the Watford man but rumours circulated that Jurgen Klopp’s side were still in for Sarr.
But now Pearce revealed that Liverpool made the decision between the pair and they opted for the Portuguese forward.
Sarr scored five goals and provided six assists last season as Watford were relegated to the Championship and the 22-year-old’s departure from Vicarage Road looks almost certain.
The Reds pulling out of the race for the Senegal international could leave the door open for other Premier League sides to make their move, with Aston Villa touted as a potential suitor in recent days.
It seems unlikely that Klopp will make any more additions to his squad, having completed the signings of Thiago and Jota of course over the weekend.
Departures seem far more possible before the transfer window closes as the Premier League champions cut both their cloth, and their squad size, accordingly.
