Liverpool are set to make a move for yet another Southampton player this summer, after raiding the Saints last year, according to Ed Malyon of The Mirror.
The acquisition of Dejan Lovren has failed to have the desired effect on the defensive record of Brendan Rodgers’ side, and with Kolo Toure’s contract expiring in the Summer and talks yet to come to a conclusion over a new deal for Martin Skrtel, the Reds will once again be on the lookout for defensive reinforcements.
According to reports in the Spanish press this week, Liverpool scouts were sent to watch Real Sociedad centre-back Inigo Martinez in action against Barcelona this past weekend.
The latest central defender to be linked with a switch to Anfield, though, is Southampton’s Jose Fonte. Much like Lovren last season, Fonte has received a lot of praise for the season he’s had at the heart of the Saints’ back four, often being deployed alongside Toby Alderweireld.
His performances this season have also put rivals Manchester United on alert, as they also look to add depth and experience to their defensive options. However, with Fonte’s price tag likely to be around the £20m that the Reds paid for Dejan Lovren last summer, it remains to be seen whether or not they will follow up their interest in the 31-year-old.
