Liverpool’s interest in Jeremy Doku revealed

Liverpool’s interest in Jeremy Doku revealed

Reputable Belgian journalist Kristof Terreur commented on Anderlecht wonderkid Jeremy Doku’s first international goal by stating: “Liverpool tried to sign him 2 years ago.”

The 18-year-old forward scored his first goal for Belgium on Tuesday night when he completed his nation’s 5-1 rout over Iceland in Brussels.

Doku’s strike came in his first senior international start, three days after he made his debut as a substitute in Roberto Martinez’s side’s victory over Denmark.

Terreur quoted Doku as saying:

They invited my parents and me for a stadium tour and a visit to the training ground. (Sadio) Mané talked to me. (Jurgen) Klopp showed interest too.

The HLN European Football Correspondent went on to say: Doku “decided to stay (at Anderlecht).”

This deal wouldn’t be the first time the two clubs have done business, whilst negotiating the loan switch for Lazar Markovic in 2018, Terreur claimed:

Liverpool even added a special Doku clause in the loan deal with Anderlecht for Lazar Markovic.

Anderlecht’s General Manager Herman Van Holsbeek (said) at the time:

We didn’t have a choice. Liverpool told us: you can loan Markovic, but we want to talk to Doku.

Markovic’s time in Belgium did not end particularly fruitfully and as things stand Doku remains an Anderlecht player, however, his continued development could see Klopp, and Liverpool renew their previous interest.
