Loris Karius’ loan spell at Union Berlin could be cancelled

Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius could be sent back to the club after his loan spell at Union Berlin has failed to work out for all parties, according to the Daily Mail.

The German, who was one of Jurgen Klopp’s first signings back in 2016, has not played competitively for the Reds since his infamous, error-strewn performance in the 2018 Champions League final.

On the back of that night in Kiev, Klopp delved back into the transfer market to sign Alisson Becker from AS Roma and the Reds haven’t looked back since.

That night proved to be a turning point in the career of Karius; since then the 27-year-old has received death threats over his Champions League final nightmare, experienced a controversial time at Besiktas and has made just one solitary appearance at Union Berlin.

German news outlet Kicker claimed that Karius’ loan spell could be ‘cancelled’ after the goalkeeper failed to make a single league outing for the Berlin club since arriving in September.

Under contract with the Premier League champions until 2023, Liverpool will have to find another solution for their much-maligned goalkeeper, or face the prospect of leaving their previously highly-rated outcast waste the next two years of his career.

READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Despite the animosity of some Liverpool fans towards the German stopper after that fateful night against Real Madrid, many Kopites may have hoped that his latest move and a return to his homeland would have spelt the end to what has been a nightmare two years for him.

However, it seems the career of a player who was once considered to be the long-term Anfield number one has gone downhill and shows no sign of righting itself.

There seems to be no future at the club for Karius, as the emergence of Irish goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher this season and the excellence of Alisson means they are not for budging.
