Lovren banned for one international game

Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has been banned for one international match over comments made on social media following his side’s 3-2 UEFA Nations League win over Spain and new rival Sergio Ramos in November.

The social media content in question was a video the Croatian shared on Instragram where he appeared to brag about elbowing Ramos, while he also made insulting comments about the Spain team.

According to the report by ESPN, Lovren accused the Spain side of being bad losers, telling reporters that the Spaniards were “rude on the pitch”.

He has now been penalised by UEFA, with the organisation claiming the 29-year old had breached a disciplinary rule, which punishes players “whose conduct is insulting or otherwise violates the basic rules of decent conduct.”

The Reds defender will now miss Croatia’s Euro 2020 qualifier with Azerbaijan in March.

The incident was just the latest in a string of bad blood clashes between Lovren and Ramos, after the Real Madrid captain lead his side to victory against Liverpool in the Champions League final last season, seemingly injuring Mohamed Salah and giving Loris Karius concussion in the process.
