Enrique plays down ‘Favourites’ tag as European Champions prepare for Liverpool re-match
  • Luis Enrique has dubbed Liverpool one of the best English clubs
  • The PSG manager has also said there are no clear favourites for the matchup
  • Enrique has highlighted the magnitude of the Liverpool vs PSG matchup

Liverpool travel to the Parc des Princes tonight for a heavyweight Champions League quarter-final first leg, with Luis Enrique insisting the tie remains a complete “50/50” despite PSG’s domestic dominance.

While many analysts point to a perceived gap in quality based on this season’s form, the reality of European knockout football often tells a different story.

Speaking ahead of the clash, the PSG manager was full of respect for the Reds and their evolution under Arne Slot, acknowledging that while both clubs are giants of the game, they are currently operating on distinct tactical trajectories.

Luis Enrique was keen to highlight that despite the high stakes, comparing the two sides isn’t straightforward due to their shifting identities this season. He noted:

“It’s difficult to say that, to speak about Liverpool. Arne Slot, he speaks very well about his team, because it’s normal. What I have to say, or what I can analyse, is two different, same teams, but at the same time different teams, because the process, this season is different for both.”

And everybody is looking forward to analysing who is the favourite, and I think it’s not important who is the favourite. I think there is no favourite in those kind of matches.”

Luis Enrique suggests it will be a tough matchup for both clubs

While both Liverpool and PSG have had their ups and downs in this campaign, the French club are clearly having the better overall season.

Indeed, the Reds have been poor by their standards, with no chance of winning any trophies other than the Champions League. Whereas PSG are currently the league leaders in Ligue 1 and have already lifted the Trophee des Champions (French Super Cup).

That said, Enrique feels that it won’t be an easy matchup for either club despite their contrasting recent form, and few would disagree with him.

Additionally he has also heaped praise on Arne Slot’s side. The Spanish tactician has said:

“We’re going to try to have the ball more than Liverpool, a very good team with quality players and a very good coach,” the PSG boss said. “It’ll be difficult.

“In the quarter-finals, it’s naturally a special game, because there are just eight teams.

“When you start to get used to being at this level, it’s great as a team. It’s of course positive to be able to show it against Liverpool. What we want is to qualify.

“We’re aware of the difficulty but we’re motivated. We want to enjoy playing at the Parc.”

PSG heading into the first leg with significant absences, as both Bradley Barcola and Fabian Ruiz have been ruled out of the clash at the Parc des Princes.

The matchup carries a heavy sense of déjà vu for the Parisians. Just 13 months ago, this same fixture produced one of the most unlikely results in recent European history.

On that night, Harvey Elliott who is currently spending the season on loan at Aston Villa secured a “smash-and-grab” 1-0 victory for the Reds.

“Last season, we put in one of our best performances, but we lost. Liverpool were favourites, and PSG qualified. There’s no favourite at this stage of the competition.

“It’s important to look to control what we can control. Liverpool are a very high-level team and to think you’re the favourites is the best way to make a mess of things.

“It’s not important to know who’s the favourite in this competition, in this kind of game. It’s impossible that there’s a favourite. For me, there isn’t one.”

Challenges Liverpool will need to overcome against PSG

Mohamed Salah, who has played a key part in Liverpool’s success in the last decade, is clearly not in form. The Egyptian winger has struggled recently and seems to be a shadow of his old self now. He will need to find his form one way or another against PSG.

Apart from that, other Reds players will also need to step up their game. It is worth mentioning that Alexander Isak has returned from injury and can get some minutes against PSG.

In conclusion, the Liverpool vs PSG fixture is slated to be an exciting matchup. The Reds might have been shaky lately, but they certainly have the quality to come out on top over the two legs.
