Liverpool’s academy is facing a major blow this summer. Highly rated young striker Vincent Joseph is expected to leave Anfield, with fierce rivals Manchester United among the clubs ready to pounce on the 16-year-old sensation.
Joseph is widely considered one of the standout talents in Liverpool’s younger age groups. His potential exit represents a deeply frustrating scenario for the Reds, who have nurtured the young forward since he joined the club at under-9 level.
A sensation in the making
Having only turned 16 in January, Joseph made an instant impact upon his promotion to Simon Wiles’ Under-18s side last season. He scored just 10 minutes into his debut during a 4-3 loss to Sunderland in March.
Three weeks later, he netted a brilliant brace in a 4-3 victory over Nottingham Forest, ending his brief U18 campaign with an incredible three goals in just two games, alongside a prolific scoring run at the U16 level.
Player Profile: Vincent Joseph
- Versatility: Started his career as a midfielder, allowing him to excel as a number nine, a number ten, or out wide.
- Key Attributes: Incredible pace, clinical finishing, strong hold-up play, and superb passing vision.
- Big-Match Pedigree: Captained Liverpool at Bayern’s Under-15 Elite Cup in 2024 and led the team to victory at the Pape indoor tournament in Germany, scoring in the quarter-final, semi-final, and final.
- nternational Form: A star for the England Under-16s, Joseph bagged eight goals in nine appearances last term, including a spectacular hat-trick late last year.
The contract stumbling block
Despite his obvious trajectory toward the first team, Liverpool now face the grim reality of losing him. The Reds recently announced a 12-strong group for next season’s scholarship intake, and Joseph’s name was glaringly absent.
While Liverpool successfully agreed to terms with other top academy prospects like Josh Abe, Erik Farkas, Zak Coxon, Shadrach Ekiugbo, and Charlie Huth, Joseph was not included.
This omission has triggered an intense transfer battle. While Liverpool haven’t entirely given up hope of agreeing to terms, the likelihood is that the teenage striker will move on.
Manchester United and European giants circle
According to The Secret Scout, Manchester United hold a “strong interest” and are actively monitoring the situation to bolster their youth ranks. The Red Devils’ U18s lost the FA Youth Cup final to Manchester City last month and are desperate to recruit the best youngsters in the country.
Furthermore, United manager Michael Carrick has proven he is willing to hand youth players a direct pathway to first-team training and senior football—a factor that could heavily appeal to Joseph.
United aren’t alone in their pursuit, however. This Is Anfield understands that Chelsea are keeping tabs on the situation, while German heavyweights Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have both scouted the youngster regularly.
The Next Generation at the AXA Training Centre
While losing Joseph is a bitter pill to swallow, Liverpool’s academy is far from stagnant. The club is already actively targeting other high-potential talents to offset the loss.
Manchester City midfielder Xavier Parker and Leicester City attacker Darren Motsi are both heavily linked with summer moves to the AXA Training Centre.
Furthermore, the academy continues to promote from within:
- Josh Abe (15): Expected to be fast-tracked to the U21s squad next season, with plans to give him exposure at the first-team level.
- Zak Coxon (16): Set to become a focal point for the U18s’ attacking line next year.
Losing a homegrown talent of Vincent Joseph’s caliber to a direct rival like Manchester United would hurts, but Liverpool’s youth conveyor belt is already preparing for life after the teenage star.
