Murphy: Rodgers considered me

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has revealed that he was approached by manager Brendan Rodgers over a coaching role at the club for the forthcoming season/

The 38-year-old says he was considered for the role of first-team coach after the departures of Colin Pascoe and Mike Marsh during the summer.

It became clear that the Reds were after somebody who knew the club well, and therefore eventually brought in ex-player Gary McAllister.

“A few weeks ago I did have a chat with Brendan about the possibility of maybe working with him and the club again but it didn’t quite materialise,” Murphy told the Liverpool Echo.

“It was actually an honour to be thought of by him.

“Being in his company for a few hours was great, he was very impressive and as we know Gary McAllister got that job, who is a friend of mine and is a very bright and experienced coach. He’s a good guy and I wish him all the best and the club all the best, but it was nice to be thought of.”

Murphy went on to discuss how he feels the Reds will fare this season:

“Liverpool will be better this season. I think Benteke’s a really good player.

“The thing for Liverpool now is what system are they going to play? I think they’ll play Benteke up on his own, wait for Sturridge to get fit and then maybe tweak it, play the two Brazilian lads Coutinho and Firmino in off the wings and really get the creativity from there.

“They’ve got Milner, Henderson and Emre Can as a midfield three. It looks a lot more solid than it did last season, some real legs, energy. Henderson and Milner both know the Premier League well.”
