Paul Parker: Keeping Rodgers is a mistake

Liverpool have made a huge error not sacking manager Brendan Rodgers according to Paul Parker.

FSG’s Michael Gordon and Tom Werner held a meeting with Rodgers in which the Ulsterman’s future was high on the agenda but it appears that the 42-year-old has opted to save himself and sacrifice his backroom staff with first team coach Mike Marsh leaving, quickly followed by assistant manager Colin Pascoe.

The ex-England international said in his Eurosport column: “Rodgers is very, very lucky to still be Liverpool manager. If Jurgen Klopp and Carlo Ancelotti had not decided to go sabbaticals then I am pretty sure that Rodgers would no longer be Liverpool boss.

“Liverpool’s owners made a huge mistake not sacking the Northern Irishman over the summer. If the Reds haven’t shown huge improvement by November, they won’t make the same mistake again.”

Despite the transfer committee the club has, Parker, who represented his country 19 times at senior level, believes Rodgers is to blame for the club’s poor signings:

“The transfer committee appears to be shouldering the blame for this, but unless Brendan Rodgers comes out and explicitly says that he fought tooth and nail against last summer’s acquisition policy then the buck stops with him.”

Before arriving at Anfield, Rodgers had been manager at Watford, Reading and Swansea City and the former Manchester United and Fulham full-back thinks that Rodgers’ lack of reputation as a manager has cost him:

“Who in their right mind would trust Rodgers in that way? What big name will trust him now? What top quality player would trust Rodgers with their career? Or have faith that, if they sign, they’ll be lining up alongside a team of world beaters? Who would trust Rodgers to get them a chance at playing in the Champions League?”

This summer the club have opted to move swiftly to secure the signings of James Milner and Danny Ings on a free transfer, but Parker isn’t that impressed:

“Their business so far this summer – bringing in Danny Ings and James Milner – says it all. Solid, not spectacular. The sort of players who’ll get you in the Europa League, all being well.”
