Javier Manquillo’s two-year loan spell at Liverpool has been cut in half, Atlético Madrid have confirmed.
The Spanish right-back was signed in last summer and featured 19 times for the Reds during the 2014-15 campaign.
But he was rarely seen in the latter half of the season with manager Brendan Rodgers resorting to a back three.
When the defensive line included four players, German midfielder Emre Can was utilised as the right-back.
The Reds have just signed Nathaniel Clyne from Southampton, and that meant Manquillo fell further down the pecking order.
Furthermore, the return of Andre Wisdom and the arrival of new signing Joe Gomez, who can also play as a right-back, would have seen Manquillo’s playing time become even more limited.
