The battle to sign £70m-rated Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk has been narrowed down to Chelsea and Liverpool, with the Reds seemingly surrendering pole position, as per the Irish Independent.

Chelsea have parted ways with captain John Terry and Sky Sports are reporting that Nathan Ake could head to Bournemouth. Kurt Zouma is also likely to depart on loan according to the Evening Standard.
With that in mind, the Premier League champions will be on the lookout for a new centre-back, but Jurgen Klopp won’t give up on van Dijk without a fight.
Anfield was the defender’s preferred destination back in early June, as reported by the Guardian, but the Reds ended their interest with a statement on the club’s official website after widespread media speculation surrounding the Saints defender’s future.
It promises to be an intriguing saga with very little certainty at this stage as to where van Dijk will end up. For Liverpool, this is a two-horse race they can not afford to lose.
