According to Spanish newspaper Marca, Liverpool have sounded out former Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti with a view to him replacing Brendan Rodgers at Anfield, with the Northern Irishman’s job looking increasingly at risk despite the recent backing from the board.
After a trophy-less season, Los Blancos relieved Ancelotti of his duties earlier this week, with ex-Reds manager Rafa Benitez looking more and more likely to be his replacement at the Bernabeu after weeks of being linked with a move back to Liverpool.
Madrid enjoyed a successful season in Ancelotti’s first campaign, with his side winning both the Copa Del Rey and arguably their most important European trophy in their history, La Decima.
However, Ancelotti’s side struggled on all fronts this season, failing to match Barcelona in La Liga and being knocked out of the Champions League by Juventus in the semi-final.
Ancelotti, who has reportedly been approached by a number of clubs, is said to be keen on a return to the Premier League, after a successful spell with Chelsea between 2009 and 2011. He won three trophies in his time at Stamford Bridge; the Community Shield, Premier League and the FA Cup.
Marca, who are viewed as Real Madrid’s mouthpiece in the media, have reported that Ancelotti had planned to take a year out but Liverpool is a club he would change those plans for in order to join.
