Remarkable Liverpool substitution statistic arises after Tottenham win

A truly remarkable statistic emerged after Liverpool 2-1 victory over Tottenham – one that is scarcely believable.

The Reds got the better of Jose Mourinho’s side on Wednesday night, with Anfield hosting a dramatic contest.

Mohamed Salah and Son Heung-min traded first half goals, before Roberto Firmino’s 90th-minute header sealed victory for Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp opted to make no substitutions on the night, leading to one staggering statistic arising courtesy of Ged Rea, Liverpool’s statistician [via journalist Carl Markham on Twitter]:

It states that it was the first time the Reds haven’t made a change for 908 games, since the late Gerard Houllier was in charge in 2003/04, at home to Newcastle.

It is a stat that is almost impossible to get your head around – you would have thought there had been games in that time when no subs were made.

It seems almost fitting that the record was ended in the week that Houllier sadly passed away at the age of 73, and he would have loved the drama that unfolded at Anfield on Wednesday.

The irony, of course, is that Klopp has been openly critical about the Premier League not allowing five subs to be made, but then he goes and brings nobody on.

You’ve got to love him.
