Rodgers lauds Origi display

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has praised the performance of the team, namely Divock Origi, as the Reds beat Thai All Stars 4-0 in their first pre-season game.

Rodgers fielded two different teams for each half with Lazar Markovic and Mamadou Sakho scoring in the first half.

The Northern Irishman brought on new signings James Milner and Divock Origi, with Belgian scoring the last of Liverpool’s four goals after Adam Lallana put the Reds 3-0 up.

But it was 20-year-old Origi’s first appearance in a Liverpool shirt which pleased Rodgers.

Speaking to Lfctour.com, Rodgers said: “Firstly Divock, I thought he was excellent. You can see his movement and what really pleased me tonight was his persistence.

“He had a couple of chances that he missed that he would want to score. But he kept going, he was very positive, and obviously he showed how good he is in the air. [It was] a great cross into the box and it was a good header that he scored, so we’re very pleased for him.”

Markovic put Liverpool 1-0 within the opening five minutes, but Rodgers is hoping that the youngster can push on in his second season at Anfield after failing to impress in his first campaign.

“The attitude of all the players was very good,” said the Ulsterman. “Lazar, [his] first year [was] adapting as a really young player, 20-21 years of age, to a big club. Hopefully, this second year he can really push on.”

The 42-year-old has already been busy in the transfer market, and fans saw the likes of Milner, Joe Gomez, Nathaniel Clyne and Adam Bogdan in a Liverpool shirt for the first time on Tuesday, and Rodgers is pleased with how they have fitted into the squad.

“I thought James Milner was outstanding, showed his quality, his intensity. Nathaniel Clyne was excellent, I thought young Joe Gomez in the first half came in and was very, very good. Adam Bodgan was secure, so all of those players fitted into our way of working very well.”

Rodgers had named eight players from the academy in the tour squad and fans in Thailand were able to see Jordan Rossiter, Joao Teixeria and Joe Maguire in action for the first team.

The squad play their second pre-season game on Friday in Australia against Brisbane Roar.
