Sam Allardyce ‘underwhelmed’ by Liverpool’s transfer business

Former Premier League manager Sam Allardyce has been left ‘underwhelmed’ by the lack of transfers at Liverpool over the summer.

Following the departure of Gini Wijnaldum and a brutal injury crisis last term, Jurgen Klopp was expected to double down on cover for all positions.

Instead, the Reds only managed to add Ibrahima Konate to the first-team ranks before the transfer deadline passed and many have been left bewildered by the inactivity.

Speaking on Sky Sports in the aftermath of the window closing, ex-Everton boss Allardyce admitted the club may regret their quiet summer.

I am a bit underwhelmed by Liverpool, not much activity there. Wijnaldum going and only one man coming in. I know that they are basing a lot on their injured players and the quality of their injured players coming back. But who is to say they won’t have that injury crisis again somewhere in the season? And they obviously show that they don’t cope with it that well, so that was a bit underwhelming.

Since welcoming back Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip to the heart of the defence, Liverpool are unbeaten in the opening three Premier League matches, conceding just once.

Whilst it’s almost unimaginable to be in agreement with a former Everton manager, Allardyce is almost right on the money here.

Although the club didn’t necessarily need to plan for another injury situation as dramatic as last season, one or two smart additions would’ve boosted the squad sufficiently.

Well-stocked in terms of numbers in midfield – albeit many with wretched injury records – it’s perhaps the forward line that was most in need of a fresh face.

Any long-term absentee from Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane or the currently sidelined Roberto Firmino, will see Klopp forced into relying on the eternally unreliable Divock Origi or an unproven Takumi Minamino.
