Skrtel agrees new contract

Martin Skrtel has agreed a new contract with Liverpool, according to Tony Barrett of The Times.

The news comes a day after his agent has stated that the defender, who had one year remaining on his contract, had turned down a move to Inter Milan and decided to stay at Anfield.

Skrtel is another Reds player who recently went public about his contract issues, amidst all the uproar surrounding Raheem Sterling.

The centre-back was disappointed with an ‘unacceptable’ offer that was proposed to him by Liverpool and stated that it was the sort of contract clubs give to older players or those who have health problems.

Clubs around Europe were monitoring the Slovakian international’s situation and waiting to make a move for him.

His agent, Karol Csonto, spoke about the serious interest coming from Italy for his client, but quashed speculation of a move.

Csonto told FCInterNews.it“I confess that there were not mere rumours, the interest from Inter was real.

“But then the deal did not go ahead, there was contact made.

“The player had been thinking about his future and eventually opted to remain at Liverpool.

“As this time I can say that it is likely [he will sign a new contract].”

Skrtel joined Liverpool from Zenit St Petersburg in 2008 and has gone on to amass 293 appearances for the Reds.

The 30-year-old has established himself a key member of the team and won the club’s Player of the Year award in 2012.

He featured in 40 matches last seasons, scoring one goal.
